The professional development and obstacles along the way for newly graduated nurses in Sweden and Norway : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Nursing is a pronounced shortage profession and many leave or consider leaving the profession early on in their career, often because of high workload or poor working conditions. Healthcare organizations emphasize that newly graduated nurses are not always sufficiently prepared for the practical tasks that the profession largely relies on. A need for support has therefore been identified to help newly graduated nurses to develop confidence in their professional role at an early stage, therefore various forms of introduction programs have been established in several regions. The transition from education to professional practice can be demanding because of the gap between theory and practice, which highlights the need for increased knowledge about how the first period in the profession is experienced.
Aim: The aim was to explore the experiences of newly graduated nurses during their initial period of working life in Sweden and Norway.
Method: This systematic literature review is based on 10 qualitative studies retrieved from PubMed and CINAHL Complete.
Results: Two main themes were identified: (1) The professional development (2) Obstacles along the way. The first theme highlights the experiences that newly graduated nurses are expected to encounter during their initial period in working life, while the second theme describes the challenges that hindered their professional development. The latter theme is further divided into three subthemes: the gap between theory and practice, nursing culture, and organizational conditions.
Conclusion: Despite the inevitable uncertainty at the start of the nursing career, support, reflection, and bridging the gap between theory and practice may facilitate a faster development of professional confidence and safer care.
