Abstract [en]

Background: Person-centered care entails seeing the person being cared for beyond their disease diagnosis. The purpose of PCC is to try to provide all the individual's needs, preferences, and conditions, in order to achieve a personalized care plan for the best possible care outcomes. There are several ways to apply PCC, such as active listening, asking open-ended questions, and being present. The nurse plays a central role in working closely with patients and providing person-centered care, but this requires support from the organization and time. PCC becomes essential when caring for people with dementia, in order to preserve the care recipient's identity, participation, and autonomy.

Aim: Effects of person-centred care for persons with dementia living in nursing homes.

Method: This study is a literature review compiled from previous qualitative and quantitative research.

Results: Based on analyzed research, three main themes were compiled in the results. These main themes were mental well-being (1), behavior (2), and communication (3). Person-centered care for people with dementia in nursing homes showed positive effects on the three compiled themes. The results indicated that participants' cognitive and emotional functions improved with PCC. Behaviorally, participants' agitation, discouragement, and aggression decreased, while engagement increased. Both verbal and non-verbal communication contributed to residents feeling respected, listened to, and understood. In summary, a person-centered approach results in an improved care relationship between caregivers and care recipients, as well as increased quality of life.

Conclusion: This literature review clarifies how person-centered care for individuals with dementia in nursing homes has positive effects on mental well-being, behavior, and communication. The application of PCC has improved quality of life, participation, and individualized care by addressing the person's needs, preferences, and conditions. The results emphasize the importance of applying PCC in order to promote patients' participation, autonomy, respect, and high-quality care.
