Approaching the end of life : Relatives' experiences of their own participation in palliative care of persons with cancer: A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Cancer is one of the most common causes of death, creating a substantial need for palliative care. Informal caregivers' play a central role in palliative care, and their participation is considered essential for both the patient's well-being and the quality of care. At the same time, the caregiving responsibility often entails a burden with risks of deteriorating physical and mental health. Highlighting and strengthening their participation is therefore crucial for the quality of care as well as for the well-being of both patients and informal caregivers'.
Aim: The aim was to describe informal caregivers' experiences of their own participation in palliative care of persons with cancer.
Method: A general literature review with a systematic approach was conducted. Data collection was performed in PubMed and CINAHL. Ten scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025 were included. The articles were quality-assessed and analysed using Friberg's model for analysis.
Results: Five themes were identified: (1) informal caregivers' roles and responsibilities, (2) participation in decision-making, (3) support for informal caregivers, (4) conversations and communication, and (5) consequences for informal caregivers. Their involvement included providing practical and emotional support as well as coordinating care, but could also lead to negative consequences for health, relationships, and finances. Meaningful participation was facilitated by professional support, clear communication, and opportunities for open dialogue about death.
Conclusion: Informal caregivers participation is a central aspect of palliative care and should be regarded as a resourse in need of support. To promote parcipation and reduce associated strain, communication, education and supportive interventions for informal caregivers should be provided. These efforts may contribute to a more personcentred and high quality palliative care for both patients and their informal caregivers.
