Bakgrund: Vård i livets slut ska främja värdighet hos personer med obotlig sjukdom. Sjuksköterskors professionella kompetens är central och innebär ett ansvar att bemöta patienten utifrån ett helhetsperspektiv. God vård förutsätter samverkan mellan olika professioner för att lindra fysiska, psykiska, sociala och existentiella symtom, samtidigt som stöd ges till både patienter och deras anhöriga. Eftersom sjuksköterskor  har en central roll i detta arbete blir det särskilt viktigt att belysa sjuksköterskors egna upplevelser av att vårda döende patienter. Med Katie Erikssons caritativa vårdteori, läggs fokus på kärlek, barmhärtighet och respekt för patientens värdighet. Theorin utgör en central tolkningsram för att förstå sjuksköterskors upplevelser, som är syftet med denna litteraturöversikt.

Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda döende patienter.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt genomfördes i syfte att öka förståelsen för det aktuella kunskapsläget. Databaserna Cinahl och PubMed användes med hjälp av sökord såsom sjuksköterskors upplevelse, livets slutskede, vårdande och döende person. Resultatet baserades på tio originalartiklar med kvalitativ metod, som analyserades med hjälp av Fribergs (2022) metodbeskrivning. En kvalitetsgranskning genomfördes för att säkerställa att valda artiklar uppfyllde god kvalitet.

Resultat: Resultatet visar att sjuksköterskors erfarenheter präglas av fem återkommande teman; emotionell belastning och känslomässiga utmaningar, kommunikation och relationer, etiska dilemman och professionellt ansvar, organisatoriska hinder, resursbrist och betydelsen av professionellt stöd och samverkan. Teman belyser utmaningar och bristfälliga aspekter som sjuksköterskor upplever när de vårdar döende personer. Resultatet visar hur sjuksköterskors upplevelser kan påverka vårdandet och vårdens kvalitet. Det även framkommer förbättringsområden inom arbetet vid livets slut.

Slutsats: Kommunikation och relationer med patienter och närstående framstod som centrala men utmanande aspekter inom sjuksköterskearbetet. Centrala aspekter som syftar till att förbättra sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda döende personer inkluderar; tydligare riktlinjer, utbildning, stödinsatser och resurs förstärkningar behövs för att skapa bättre förutsättningar för sjuksköterskor och möjliggöra en trygg, värdig och personcentrerad vård i livets slut. Detta understryker vikten av organisatoriskt stöd, handledning och kollegialt samarbete för att främja sjuksköterskors välbefinnande och förmåga att ge god och empatisk vård.

Background: End-of-life care should promote dignity for individuals with incurable illness. The nurse's professional competence is central and entails a responsibility to meet the patient from a holistic perspective. High-quality care requires collaboration between different professions to alleviate physical, psychological, social, and existential symptoms, while also providing support to both patients and their relatives. Since nurses have a central role in this work, it is particularly important to highlight the nurse's own experiences of caring for dying patients. With Katie Eriksson's caritative caring theory, the focus is placed on love, compassion, and respect for the patient's dignity. The theory serves as a central interpretative framework for understanding the nurse's experiences, which is the aim of this literature review

Aim: To describe the nurses' experiences of caring for dying patients.

Method: A literature review was conducted with the aim of increasing understanding of the current state of knowledge. The databases Cinahl and PubMed were used with search terms such as nurses' experiences, end of life, caring and dying person. The results were based on ten original articles using a qualitative method, which were analyzed using Friberg's (2022) method description. A quality assessment was carried out to ensure that the selected articles met high quality standards.

Results: The results show that nurses' experiences are characterized by five recurring themes: emotional strain and emotional challenges, communication and relationships, ethical dilemmas and professional responsibility, organizational barriers and lack of resources, and the importance of professional support and collaboration. The themes highlight the challenges and shortcomings that nurses experience when caring for dying patients. The results show how nurses' experiences can influence caregiving and the quality of care. The findings also reveal areas for improvement in end-of-life care.

Conclusion: Communication and relationships with patients and their relatives emerged as central yet challenging aspects in nursing. Key factors in the aim of improving the nurses experience of caring for dying people include; clearer guidelines, education, support measures, and increased resources are needed to create better conditions for nurses and to enable safe, dignified, and person-centered end-of-life care. This highlights the importance of organizational support, supervision, and collegial collaboration to promote nurses' well-being and their ability to provide good and empathetic care.
