Nurses' experiences of caring for patients in palliative care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Palliative care aims to preserve the quality of life of patients in the final stages of life by alleviating physical, psychological, social and existential suffering. The care is based on the principles of communication, self-determination, support for loved ones and teamwork. The nurse's role is central in alleviating physical and psychological suffering and preserving existential well-being. The work also includes taking into account patient participation and support for loved ones.
Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients in palliative care.
Method: The method used is a literature review where ten qualitative scientific articles from the Pubmed and Cinahl databases were selected after a careful review process.
Results: Four recurring themes were identified: the need for existential support, effective teamwork, specialized knowledge, and good relationships with loved ones. Nurses experienced palliative care as meaningful but emotionally demanding. Lack of resources and organizational barriers made care difficult, while empathy, presence, and communication were highlighted as central prerequisites for good palliative care.
Conclusion: Palliative care is seen as a complex but important part of the professional role. Promoting sustainable end-of-life care requires organizational support, continuous skills development, and opportunities for reflection.
