Supporting relatives of patients in the end-of-life stage : Nurses' experiences: A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Within palliative care, it is part of the nurse's role to provide support to the relatives of patients at the end of life. The form of support may vary depending on the relatives' individual needs.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses' experiences of supporting family members of patients at the end of life.

Method: Literature review.

Results: Nurses experienced that providing support to relatives can be challenging due to limited knowledge about supportive measures and communication. Structural and organizational shortcomings were also perceived as problematic. Positive relationships with relatives were considered important for establishing trustworthy and high-quality care, they also enabled relatives to better support the patient.

Conclusion: Education for nurses and structural barriers within healthcare organizations need to be further developed for healthcare professionals to gain an understanding of the value of supporting relatives for the benefit of staff, relatives, and patients alike.
