Between medical demands and the ethical caring : Nurses' experiences of acute care during COVID-19: A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Covid-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, rapidly developed into a global pandemic with wide variation in clinical manifestations and high mortality among risk groups. The pandemic represented both a medical and socioeconomic crisis, leading to resource shortages, organizational changes, and ethical dilemmas for nurses. From the patient perspective, the importance of communication, participation, and person-centered care was emphasized, even under strained conditions.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of providing acute hospital care during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Method: An inductive literature review was conducted based on ten qualitative original studies exploring nurses' experiences of acute care during Covid-19, identified through systematic searches in CINAHL and PubMed.

Results: The literature review, comprising ten qualitative studies, identified four recurring themes in nurses' experiences of acute hospital care during Covid-19: "Fear and anxiety of infection", "New safety routines", "Feelings of inadequacy", and "Frustration and mistrust toward organization and leadership". These themes highlight how the pandemic affected nurses' working conditions, psychosocial health, and ability to maintain ethical and person-centered care.

Conclusion: The literature review demonstrates that nurses' experiences during Covid-19 underscore the need for crisis preparedness that extends beyond resources and guidelines to also include structures for ethical support, collegial reflection, and the possibility of sustaining person-centered care.
