Bakgrund: En stor del av vården utgörs av vård i livets slutskede. Enligt WHO är det omkring 65,8 miljoner människor världen över som årligen är i behov av palliativ vård. Palliativ vård bör erbjudas från det att en person får besked om en progressiv och obotlig sjukdom, fram till livets slut. Målet med palliativ vård är att ge lindrande behandling, med fokus på att minska smärta och andra symptom samt att förbättra patientens livskvalitet. Sjuksköterskor har ett stort ansvar för att tillgodose de omvårdnadsbehov som uppstår hos patienter i palliativt skede. Symptombilden är ofta komplex, och vården innebär både etiska utmaningar och svåra ställningstaganden.  

Syfte: Att undersöka sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av att möta patienter som befinner sig vid livets slutskede.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt baserad på 11 kvalitativa artiklar som hämtades från CINAHL och PubMed. Där artiklarna analyserades och sammanställdes genom tematisering.  

Resultat: Litteraturöversikten identifierade fyra återkommande teman: Sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av kommunikationens och stödets betydelse, Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av patienters vårdbehov i livets slutskede, sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av miljöns betydelse samt sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av utmanande situationer vid vård i livets slutskede. Kommunikationen visade sig vara en central del i vården, där såväl interaktionen med patienter, närstående som samarbetet mellan vårdteamets professioner var avgörande. Smärtlindring framstod också som en viktig aspekt inom palliativ vård, där sjuksköterskor upplevde en svår balansgång mellan att ge tillräcklig smärtlindring och risken för att ge för mycket.  

Slutsats: Resultaten visade att sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av att möta patienter i livet slutskede innefattar många etiska och emotionellt krävande beslut, samt att kommunikationen är en central aspekt i vårdandet. Sjuksköterskor upplever att en stor del av omvårdnaden handlar om att lindra patientens lidande.

Background: A significant portion of healthcare consists of end-of-life care. According to the WHO, approximately 65.8 million people worldwide are in need of palliative care each year. Palliative care should be offered from the time a person is diagnosed with a progressive and incurable illness until the end of life. The goal of palliative care is to provide relief-oriented treatment, focusing on alleviating pain and other symptoms, as well as improving the patient's quality of life. Nurses carry a major responsibility for meeting the care needs of patients in the palliative phase. The symptomatology is often complex, and the care involves both ethical challenges and difficult decisions.

Aim: The aim was to investigate nurses' experiences to meet patients at the end of life.  

Method: A literature review based on 11 qualitative articles retrieved from CINAHL and PubMed. The articles were analyzed and complied through thematic analysis. 

Results: The literature review identified four recurring themes: nurses' experiences of the importance of communication and support, nurses' experiences of patients' care needs at the end of life, nurses' experiences of the significance of the care environment, and nurses' experiences of challenging situations in end-of-life care. Communication emerged as a central aspect of care, where interaction with patients and their relatives, as well as collaboration within the healthcare team, was considered crucial. Pain relief also appeared as an important aspect of palliative care, where nurses described a difficult balance between providing adequate pain management and the risk of administering too much.

Conclusion: The results showed that nurses' experiences of meeting patients at the end of life involve many ethical and emotionally demanding decisions, and that communication is a central aspect of nursing.
