The many faces of violence : Social services work with young women exposed to intimate partner and honor related violence: A qualitative study on how gender, ethnicity, and living conditions influence the design of interventions (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how the Swedish social services work with young women exposed to intimate partner violence and honour-related violence, and how the design of support interventions is influenced by the womens' gender, ethnicity, and living conditions. The aim is to identify differences in the nature of the violence and to analyse how intersectional factors shape both the experiences of victimisation and the professional response. The study is based on a qualitative research approach, drawing on semi-structured interviews with seven social workers from various municipalities, analysed through an intersectional theoretical framework.

The findings reveal that while intimate partner violence and honour-related violence share characteristics such as control, psychological abuse, and normalisation processes, they differ significantly in terms of structure, motivation, and consequences. These distinctions affect both how the violence should be understood and how support measures need to be designed.

The study highlights that different forms of violence require distinct strategies, that social service interventions should be developed with intersectional awareness, that respectful encounters are crucial for building trust, that protective measures must counteract secondary isolation and promote psychosocial recovery, and that there is a great need for preventive work and nationally consistent guidelines, particularly in addressing honour-related violence.

This study underscores the need for a nuanced, empathetic, and legally sound approach in order to better meet the diverse needs of young women in vulnerable situations, thus contributing to a more inclusive and equitable practice in social work.
