Studien syftade till att undersöka skolkuratorers upplevelse av möjligheter i praktiken i det hälsofrämjande arbetet kring elevers psykisk ohälsa i svenska skolan. I åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer utforskades skolkuratorernas egna perspektiv på arbetet med förebyggande, tidig upptäckt och främjande insatser för att motverka psykiska ohälsa. Här studerades skolkuratorers handlingsutrymme i förhållande till arbetet med psykisk ohälsa på högstadiet i Sverige. Forskningsmetoden är kvalitativ med en hermeneutisk inriktning. Resultatet av studien visar att skolkuratorns yrkesroll är otydlig och det påverkar vilket sätt skolkuratorn kan utföra sitt uppdrag. Skolkuratorn besitter en stark vilja i att hjälpa eleverna men begränsas av faktorer som bristande samverkan, tidsbrist och i en ibland stressig och kravfylld miljö. I sitt arbete känner många skolkuratorer att de står ensamma i arbetet och med sin syn på elever med psykisk ohälsa. Centrala verktyg är tidigt upptäckt, samtalsstöd och interna och extern samverkan mellan olika yrkesgrupper och myndigheter. Strukturella hinder i skolkuratorns arbete som elevhälsans oklara riktlinjer och långa vårdköer till BUP försvårar arbetet. De flesta skolkuratorerna upplevde inte att barn med psykisk ohälsa får hjälp i tid. 

This study aims to explore school counselors' experiences of opportunities and limitations in promoting mental health among students in Swedish lower secondary schools. Through eight semi-structured interviews, the study investigates counselors' perspectives on preventive, early intervention, and health-promoting efforts to counteract mental health problems. The research has a qualitative design with a hermeneutic approach, focusing on the school counselor's scope of action within the framework of student health services. The results indicate that the school counselor's professional role is often perceived as unclear, which affects their ability to carry out their mission effectively. Despite a strong commitment to supporting students, counselors are limited by factors such as lack of collaboration, time constraints, and a demanding work environment. The counselors report feeling isolated in their work and in their view of students with mental health issues. Key tools in their practice include early identification, counseling support, and collaboration. Structural barriers in the school counselor's work, such as unclear guidelines within student health services and long waiting times for child and adolescent psychiatric care (BUP), make the work more difficult. Most school counselors felt that children with mental health problems do not receive support in time.
