Patients with mental illness and their experiences regarding attitudes in the somatic care system : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Litteratursökningen genomfördes i tre databaser. Systematiska sökningar och manuella sökningar gjordes i PubMed, Cinahl och PsycInfo. Totalt inkluderades 13 kvalitativa originalartiklar i resultatet.

Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with mental illness are more often affected by somatic disease than the rest of the population and die prematurely. Staff in somatic care lack knowledge about caring for people with mental illness and it creates insecurity. All patients should be offered equal care according to the health and medical care law. Equal care means that treatment, care, and interaction should be provided to all patients on equal terms. According to nurses ethical code they should promote that all patients are treated equally within health and medical care.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore how patients with mental illness experience the attitude of health care personnel within the somatic care system.

Methods: The method was a literature review with a systematic approach. The literature search was conducted in three databases. Systematic searches and manual searches were performed in PubMed, Cinahl, and Psycinfo. A total of 13 qualitative original articles were included in the results. Data analysis was conducted according to Thomas and Harden’s thematic analysis method.

Results: The result revealed the themes: the experience of not being seen as a person, the experience of not being understood in their mental illness and participation in the healthcare encounter was important. Patients' experiences were of healthcare staff not informing them about their care and that they were not understood in their mental illness as they were met with stigmatisation from the staff. There were also experiences that indicated that participation in their care was important for the patient group.

Conclusions: The conclusion is that it is important for patients to be involved in their care by healthcare personnel informing and listening to the patient's experiences. Education for healthcare personnel about mental illness in somatic care is needed to provide equal care.
