Abstract [sv]

Totalt samlades 352 fullständiga svar in.

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine social work students' experiences of stress during their university education and to analyse the relationship between perceived stress and various background factors such as gender, age, semester, family situation, and financial conditions. Furthermore, the study aims to contribute to increased knowledge about how stress manifests among social work students and which factors may influence their mental well-being. To answer the research questions, a quantitative method was used in the form of a digital survey. The questionnaire was distributed to social work students at several Swedish universities and included background questions, the standardized stress scale PSS-10, as well as additional questions related to everyday stress. A total of 352 complete responses were collected. The results were analysed statistically to identify overall trends and possible associations between variables. The results indicate that stress levels are relatively evenly distributed across semesters, suggesting that perceived stress is a consistent feature throughout the course of study. While some differences in stress experiences were identified based on individual factors, no clear patterns emerged. However, certain vulnerable groups were noted, such as older female students with caregiving responsibilities. The study also found that many students rarely seek support despite experiencing psychological distress, which may be related to stigma or uncertainty about their future professional role. The findings highlight the need for stronger support measures within higher education, increased awareness of stress management, and long-term strategies to promote mental health among social work students and to prevent burnout during both their studies and future professional careers.
