Women's lived experiences of postpartum psychosis : A literature review with a systematic approach (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious psychiatric condition that affects 1–2 in 1,000 women after childbirth, most commonly within the first two weeks. The condition begins with symptoms of low mood and sleep deprivation, which may initially seem like normal reactions, but can rapidly develop into severe psychotic states in manic or depressive form, characterized by suspicion, delusions and hallucinations. If the psychosis is accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and negative attitude towards the baby, the risk of suicide and infanticide increases. Early intervention is therefore crucial for the life and health of both the mother and the child.
Aim: The aim was to describe women's lived experiences of postpartum psychosis.
Methods: Literature review with a systematic approach. The literature search was performed in the databases CINAHL, PubMed and PsycInfo, resulting in 15 included articles. Thematic synthesis was performed according to Thomas and Hardens method.
Results: The analysis revealed three main themes: The feeling of losing oneself, Women's needs for safety in healthcare, and The longing to find oneself again.
Conclusions: Postpartum psychosis is a potentially life-threatening condition that negatively affects women's self-perception, relationships, and bonding with their newborn child. Lack of competence among healthcare staff may lead to missed early signs of illness with serious consequences for both mother and child. Well-informed and engaged family members play a key role in early detection and recovery support. Women seek security in healthcare through information, attentive staff, and family centered care. These factors are crucial in preventing negative outcomes and reducing fear, stigma, and vulnerability.
