Nurses' experiences of providing palliative care to children : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Trots utmaningarna finner många mening i yrket.

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is an important part of health care that should be offered to all patients in need of relief, regardless of the stage of illness. Care can be provided in various settings, such as at home, in hospitals, or in specialized facilities, and involves a broad area of knowledge including medical, social, and psychological aspects to improve the patient's quality of life. Working with children in palliative care is particularly complex, as children are in different stages of development, which affects how care and conversations about the end of life should be adapted. It requires great competence, empathy, and the ability to meet both the child's and the family's unique needs.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe nurses experiences of providing palliative care to children.

Method: A literature review based on 10 scientific articles. Data collection was conducted in the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. Data analysis was carried out using Friberg’s method of analysis.

Results: The results showed that nurses experiences of providing palliative care to children were characterized by both negative and positive aspects. Four main themes emerged: Emotional challanges, copingstrategies, education and competence, and meaningfulness.

Conclusion: The literature review shows that nurses working with children receiving palliative care often experience a strong emotional burden, especially in relation to the children’s suffering and death. Lack of education creates uncertainty, but collegial support and coping strategies help them manage their work. Despite the challenges, many find meaning in their profession. There is a clear need for more education and support to strengthen nurses well-being and the quality of care.
