The way away from crime : A qualitative study on the significance of individual, social, and societal factors for avoiding recidivism (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of individuals who have disengaged from a criminal lifestyle and to identify the factors that have been significant in their process of change. The study is based on qualitative interviews with ten individuals with previous experiences of repeated criminal relapse, who today live outside of criminality. The study explores the impact of individual, social, and societal factors on the process of desistance from crime. The empirical findings have been analysed through the lens of Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory to provide a comprehensive understanding of how different levels of an individual's environment interact and influence the conditions for a successful transformation.

The results indicate that the path away from criminality and toward sustained desistance is neither straightforward nor without obstacles. It is a long-term process that unfolds over time rather than through a single decision or event. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of a combination of internal motivation, access to support, and relevant societal interventions in facilitating lasting change.

To effectively support individuals seeking to leave a criminal lifestyle and to prevent recidivism, there is a need for coordinated, individualized, and long-term interventions tailored to each person's specific needs.
