Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka yrkesverksamma socionomers erfarenheter av att möta våldsutsatta äldre kvinnor i deras uppbrottsprocesser. Studien baserades på nio kvalitativa, semistrukturerade intervjuer med yrkesverksamma från både Stockholmsområdet och andra delar av landet. Genom intervjuerna har ett antal frågeställningar besvarats. Dessa handlade om vad som hindrar och möjliggör ett uppbrott, hur äldre kvinnors våldsutsatthet synliggörs och vilket stöd som finns före, under och efter uppbrottsprocessen. Empirin har sedan bearbetats genom hermeneutisk meningstolkning och tematisk analys och sedan analyserats utifrån Holmberg och Enanders teoretiska modell om uppbrottsprocesser och begreppet ålderism. 

Studien visar att äldre våldsutsatta kvinnor möter särskilda svårigheter som hindrar ett uppbrott. Dels att ha levt ett långt liv med våldsutövaren och rädslan för att bli ensam, dels praktiska hinder som dålig ekonomi och svårigheter att få en bostad. Studien visar också organisatoriska hinder där stödinsatser gällande våldsutsatthet inte är anpassade efter äldres behov, och att det tyder på ålderistiska föreställningar om äldre som enbart omsorgsbehövande. Samtidigt visar studien att det finns faktorer som möjliggör ett uppbrott: Anhörigas stöd och engagemang och att den äldre kvinnan har ett tryggt socialt nätverk som kan ge henne praktiskt och emotionellt stöd. Resultatet visar också att yrkesverksamma socionomer har en central roll i äldre kvinnors uppbrottsprocesser genom att erbjuda ett långvarigt stöd, finnas kvar och bygga förtroendefulla relationer till den äldre kvinnan.

The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of professional social workers in supporting older women during the process of leaving an abusive partner. The study was based on nine qualitative, semi-structured interviews with professionals from both the Stockholm area and other parts of Sweden. Through these interviews, several key questions were addressed. These concerned the factors that hinder or facilitate leaving, how violence against older women is made visible by professionals, and what forms of support that are available before, during, and after the process of leaving their abuser. The empirical data was processed using hermeneutic interpretation and thematic analysis and subsequently analyzed through the theoretical lens of Holmberg and Enander’s model of the leaving process(es) of battered women and the concept of ageism.  

The study shows that older women exposed to violence face particular challenges that can hinder them from leaving their abuser. These include having spent a long life with the perpetrator and the fear of being alone, as well as practical obstacles such as poor financial resources and difficulties in securing housing. The study also highlights organizational barriers, where support services related to violence are not adapted to the needs of older individuals, reflecting ageist assumptions that older people are solely care-dependent. At the same time, the study identifies factors that facilitate a breakup. These include the support and involvement of relatives and the presence of a secure social network that can provide both practical and emotional assistance. The findings also underscore the central role of professionals in the breakup processes of older women by offering long-term support, remaining present, and building trusting relationships with the women involved.
