Denna studies syfte var att undersöka hur professionella upplever sitt arbete med våldsutövare i våld i nära relation. Fokuset har legat på utmaningar, förhållningssätt och personliga attityder med hopp om att bidra med nya perspektiv på ett relativt ouppmärksammat område. Studien har genomförts med kvalitativ forskningsmetod. Totalt har tio semistrukturerade intervjuer genomförts med professionella med varierande arbetstitlar och utbildningsbakgrunder som arbetar med våldsutövare i nära relation runtom i Sverige. Empirin har analyserats utifrån Erving Goffmans dramaturgiska perspektiv samt Goffmans teori om stigma.  

Studiens resultat visar att intervjurespondenterna upplevde att deras arbete med våldsutövare innebar många utmaningar, men det var inte till den grad att det fick dem att vilja avstå arbetet. Tvärtom fanns en drivkraft att fortsätta möta klienternas komplexa behov och hitta sätt att hantera dem.  

Det de professionella fann viktigt i sitt arbete var att ha ett icke dömande förhållningssätt och att se människan bakom våldshandlingen. Våra respondenter hade en förmåga att söka efter den del av sina klienter som var motiverad och villig att förändras. Det var av vikt att vara inkännande och låta klienterna berätta sin historia. Detta för att skapa sig en förståelse för klienten och dess bakgrund, för att sedan kunna ta reda på anledningen till det våldsamma beteendet. Målet var att arbeta mot förändring av klientens beteende och tankar kring våld och nära relationer. Yttre faktorer, såsom kollegers åsikter och attityder inom socialt arbete, tolkar vi inte påverkade respondenternas personliga attityder mer än att det förstärkte deras känsla av att sprida ytterligare kunskap om våld i nära relationer och arbetet med våldsutövare. Däremot kan tidigare arbetserfarenheter ha en påverkan på respondenternas attityd gentemot våldsutövare, både på ett positivt och negativt sätt. Det var tydligt att det fanns ett driv att fortsätta arbetet för att bidra till att våld i nära relation upphör.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how professionals experience their work with perpetrators of domestic violence. The focus has been on challenges, approaches, and personal attitudes, with the hope of contributing new perspectives on a relatively underexplored area. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method. A total of ten semi-structured interviews were done with professionals with varying job titles and educational backgrounds who work with perpetrators of domestic violence throughout Sweden. The empirical data has been analyzed from Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective as well as his theory of stigma.  

The results of the study show that the interview respondents felt that their work with perpetrators involved many challenges, but it was not to the extent that it made them want to stop working in this field. On the contrary, there was a drive to continue meeting the clients' complex needs and find ways to manage them. 

What the professionals found important in their work was to maintain a non-judgmental approach and see the person behind the violent act. Our respondents had an ability to search for the part of their clients that was motivated and willing to change. It was important to be empathetic and allow the clients to tell their story. This was done in order to gain an understanding of the client and their background and then figure out what might be the reason behind the violent behavior. The goal was to work towards changing the client’s behavior and thoughts about violence and intimate relationships. External factors, such as colleagues' opinions and attitudes within social work, were interpreted by us as not affecting the respondents' personal attitudes more than by reinforcing their sense of spreading further knowledge about domestic violence and working with perpetrators. However, previous work experiences may influence the respondents' attitudes towards perpetrators, both positively and negatively. It was clear that there was a strong drive to continue working to help end domestic violence.
