Work-related compassion fatigue in nurses : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The background highlights nurses’ core competencies, with focus on person-centred care, empathy, and care relationships. Compassion fatigue is described as an emotional condition caused by prolonged exposure to suffering that negatively affects well-being and care quality.

Aim: The aim was to describe the nurse's personal experience of compassion fatigue.

Method: A literature review written based on 10 scientific articles, retrieved from the database PubMed and CINAHL Complete.

Results: The results included seven qualitative and three quantitative articles from seven differents countries. Four themes emerged: Burnout and emotional exhaustion, grief and frustration resulting from perceived inadequacy in alleviating suffering, factors leading to compassion fatigue and the importance of self-care and boundary setting.

Conclusion: The literature review showed that compassion fatigue is a common and complex phenomenon among nurses. Insufficient recovery, prolonged exposure to suffering, and lack of boundaries contributed to distress, while self-care and collegial support were protective factors.
