Healthcare staff´s experiences of self-care in patients with type 2 diabetes : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Typ 2 diabetes is a chronic disease where selfcare is crucial for preventing complications. Nurses play a key role in supporting patients in their selfcare management.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe health care staffs experiences of supporting self care in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Method: A literature review was conducted based on Friberg model. Articles were searched in PubMed and CINAHL Complete, and the included studies were analyzed using manifest content analysis. The study has, among other things, teken into account issues of informed consent and anonymity in the studies included, which contributes to the ethical integrity of the resarch.

Results: Supporting patient selfcare involves tailoring care to individual needs while healthcare professionals often work whitin organizational constrains and limited resources. Four overarching themes emerged from the findings, communication and the relationship between healthcares providers and patients, working conditions and structural barriers within the healthcare system, the need for knowledge, competence and continuous education, as well as cultural and contextual factors that influence the ability to provide individualized care.

Conclusion: Nurses require individualized, pedagogical and structural support to effekctively  promote selfcare in patient in typ 2 diabetes. Organizational resources and conditions significantly affect the ability to provide sustainable support.
