Lgbtqi+ persons' experiences of care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: There are heteronormative assumptions in society against LGBTQI+ people such as stigma and prejudice. Research shows that LGBTQI+ people are exposed to discrimination, persecution, violence and even the death penalty. Research also shows that LGBTQI+ people have poorer health, both physical and mental, and are at greater risk of depression and other diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Health and medical care should work in a person-centered manner and be based on values where everyone should be treated equally regardless of who they are.

Aim: The aim was to highlight LGBTQI+ people's experiences of treatment from healthcare professionals in the healthcare system.

Method: A literature review was conducted to answer the purpose. The results are based on ten scientific articles. The articles were retrieved from the databases CINAHL Complete and PubMed.

Results: The results are presented in three themes: Experiences of social norms and heteronormative assumptions are important, The competence and training of the staff affect experiences, and Participation in care.

Conclusion: There is a knowledge gap among healthcare professionals that requires more training to be able to provide everyone with the person-centered care everyone is entitled to and to reduce the stigma that currently exists. The healthcare environment needs to be made more inclusive to create a safe place and more trust in healthcare.
