Bakgrund: Suicidnära patienter finns över hela världen och i många samhällen är suicid ett stigmatiserat ämne. Därav är det förebyggande arbetet mot suicid inte lika prioriterat. Den bristande förståelsen kring ämnet kan leda till att många suicidnära patienter lever i ensamhet och isolering med ökad risk att dö i suicid. Oberoende var en sjuksköterska arbetar kommer suicidnära patienter förekomma. Därav är det angeläget att sjuksköterskan har kännedom samt kunskap kring vård av suicidnära patienter för att främja hälsa och minska lidande.

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda suicidnära patienter.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt baserad på totalt 11 artiklar hämtade från databaserna Pubmed och Cinahl complete. Varav 10 artiklar med kvalitativmetod och en med mixad metod. Analys och kvalitetsgranskning av artiklarna utfördes enligt Fribergs (2022) beskrivning.

Resultat: Resultatet av artiklarna samanställdes och kategoriserades i tre huvudteman och fem underteman. Vårdrelationen och dialogens betydelse vid vårdandet av en suicidnära patient, vård av en suicidnära patient är emotionellt utmanande och hinder att identifiera riskfaktorer. Vårdrelation och dialogens betydelse vid vårdandet av en suicidnära patient innehåller tre underteman: Strategier att skapa en god vårdrelation, rädsla och osäkerhet kan leda till undvikande av ämnet suicid och samtal som skapar hopp. Vidare har hinder att identifiera riskfaktorer två underteman: Kunskapsbrist och tidsbristen vid bedömning av suicidnära patient ger stress.

Slutsats: Litteraturöversikten visar att sjuksköterskorna ibland kände sig osäkra i mötet med suicidnära patienter vilket grundar sig i brist på kunskap och tid. Detta i sin tur påverkade bedömningen av patienten samt deras vårdrelation. Sjuksköterskorna beskrev en upplevelse av att inte ha gjort tillräckligt och en stress relaterat till tidsbristen.

Background: Suicidal patients are found all over the world, but in many societies suicide is a stigmatized topic. Therefore, preventive work against suicide is not prioritized. The lack of understanding of the subject can lead to many suicidal patients living in loneliness and isolation. Suicidal patients can be present in health care regardless of the field in which nurses work. Therefore, it’s important that the nurse has knowledge and understanding of how to care for these patients in the best way to promote health and reduce suffering.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for suicidal patients.

Method: A literature review based on 11 articles from the databases Pubmed and Cinahl Complete. 10 of these articles were of a qualitative method and one of them a mixed method. A content analysis was performed and quality – reviewed based on Friberg (2022) description.

Results: The results of the articles were combined and categorized into three main themes and five subthemes. The main themes were: The care relationship and the importance of dialogue when caring for a suicidal patient. Caring for a suicidal patient is emotionally challenging and an obstacle to identifying risk factors. The first theme: The care relationship and the importance of dialogue when caring for a suicidal patient were divided into three subthemes: Strategies to create a good care relationship, fear and uncertainty can lead to avoidance of the topic of suicide and conversations that create hope. The third theme: An obstacle to identifying risk factors had two subthemes: Lack of knowledge and the lack of time when assessing suicidal patients causes stress.

Conclusion: The literature review shows that the nurses described feeling insecure in the encounter with suicidal patients, which is based on a lack of time and knowledge. This in turn affected the assessment of the patient and the nurses described a feeling of not having done enough.
