Bakgrund: Palliativ vård är en vårdform som syftar till att förbättra livskvaliteten för patienter med progressiva och obotliga sjukdomar. Fokus ligger på att lindra symtom, hantera lidande och ge stöd både till patienter och närstående under sjukdomsförloppet och efteråt. Palliativ vård utgår från ett holistiskt perspektiv och bevarar patienters värdighet fram till livets slutskede. I Sverige uppskattas cirka 80 % av de drygt 90 000 personer som årligen avlider ha behov av palliativ vård.

Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med cancer inom palliativ vård i livets slutskede.

Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturöversikt som baseras på tio vårdvetenskapliga originalartiklar från databaserna Cinahl Complete och PubMed.

Resultat: Tre teman framkom; Den emotionella påverkan av palliativ vård i livets slutskede hos sjuksköterskor, Relationer mellan sjuksköterskor, patienter och närstående inom palliativ vård i livets slutskede, och Utmaningar inom palliativ vård i livets slutskede.

Slutsats: Resultatet visar att sjuksköterskor som vårdar patienter med cancer inom palliativ vård i livet slutskede möter både emotionella och praktiska utmaningar, men att arbetet också är meningsfullt och erbjuder möjlighet till reflektion över existentiella frågor. Resultaten indikerar att palliativ vård i livets slutskede är emotionellt påfrestande, och att brister i kommunikation, samarbete inom vårdteamet samt resurser och förståelse för den palliativa vårdens innebörd kan bidra till detta. Trots rekommendationer om regelbunden fortbildning visar sjuksköterskor brister i sin kommunikationsförmåga och kunskap inom området. För att förbättra sjuksköterskors upplevelser krävs bättre kommunikations- och copingsstrategier, samt en förbättrad vårdmiljö och stödstruktur för både patienter och personal, vilket är avgörande för att säkerställa högkvalitativ och säker palliativ vård. 

Background: Palliative care is a form of care that aims to improve the quality of life for patients with progressive and incurable diseases. The focus is on relieving symptoms, managing suffering and providing support to both patients and their loved ones during the course of the disease and afterwards. Palliative care is based on a holistic perspective and preserves patients' dignity until the end of life. In Sweden, it is estimated that approximately 80% of the more than 90,000 people who die annually need palliative care.

Aim: To describe nurses' experinces of caring for patients with cancer in palliative care at the end-of-life.

Method: A qualitative literature review based on ten original health science articles from the Cinahl Complete and PubMed databases.

Results: Three themes emerged: The emotional impact of palliative care at the end-oflife on nurses, Relationships between nurses, patients, and relatives in palliative care at the end-of-life, and Challenges in palliative care at the end-of life.

Conclusion: The results show that nurses caring for patients with cancer in palliative care at the end-of-life face both emotional and practical challenges, but that the work is also meaningful and offers opportunities for reflection on existential issues. The results indicate that palliative care at the end-of-life is emotionally demanding, and that deficiencies in communication, collaboration within the care team, and resources and understanding of the meaning of palliative care can contribute to this. Despite recommendations for regular training, nurses show deficiencies in their communication skills and knowledge in the field. Improving nurses' experiences requires better communication and coping strategies, as well as an improved care environment and support structure for both patients and staff, which is crucial to ensuring high-quality and safe palliative care.
