Bakgrund: När ett barn blir allvarligt sjukt och är i behov av palliativ vård berörs inte bara barnets föräldrar, utan även andra personer i barnets omgivning, som exempelvis syskon och sjuksköterskor. Palliativ vård av barn är en komplex och krävande uppgift för sjuksköterskan, där omvårdnaden syftar till att lindra lidande i alla dess dimensioner och samtidigt ge stöd till barnets familj.

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva föräldrars erfarenheter av att ha ett barn som behöver palliativ vård.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt baserad på elva originalartiklar inhämtade från databaserna PubMed och CINAHL Complete.

Resultat: Tre huvudteman och sju underteman identifierades. Första temat Betydelsen av stöd från vården med underteman Samordning inom vården och Individuella och stödjande anpassningar. Andra temat Vikten av information från vårdpersonal med underteman Kommunikation utifrån föräldrars förutsättningar och behov och Möjlighet till delaktighet och beslutsfattande. Tredje temat Det pågående livet och en förändrad föräldraroll med tillhörande underteman Känsla av otillräcklighet för sitt sjuka barn och oro inför framtiden, Påverkan på hela familjen och att inte räcka till för barnets syskon och Upplevd ensamhet och strävan efter meningsfullhet.

Sammanfattning: Föräldrars erfarenheter av att ha barn som behöver palliativ vård innefattar upplevelser som berör mycket mer än det sjuka barnet, där föräldrarollen innebär svårigheter att räcka till såväl känslomässigt som i det vardagliga livet. Sjuksköterskor har stor möjlighet att med sitt förhållningssätt påverka tillvaron för barnen och deras familjer. Den ojämna tillgången till palliativ vård av barn behöver lyftas fram för att fler familjer ska få möjlighet till det stöd som palliativ vård kan innebära. Litteraturöversikten belyser behovet att ta del av föräldrars erfarenheter för att underlätta tillvaron för dem och deras barn. 

Background: When a child becomes seriously ill and is in need of palliative care, not only the child's parents are affected, but also other people in the child's environment, such as siblings and nurses. Palliative care for children is a complex and demanding task for the nurse, where nursing aims to alleviate suffering in all its dimensions and at the same time provide support to the child's family.

Aim: The aim was to describe parents' experiences of having a child who needs palliative care.

Method: A literature review based on eleven original articles obtained from the databases PubMed and CINAHL Complete.

Results: Three main themes and seven sub-themes were identified. First theme The importance of support from healthcare with sub-themes Coordination in care and Individual and supportive adaptations. Second theme The importance of information from healthcare professionals with sub-themes Communication based on parents' conditions and needs and Opportunity for participation and decision-making. Third theme The ongoing life and a changed parental role with associated sub-themes Feeling of inadequacy for one's sick child and worry about the future, Impact on the whole family and not being enough for the child's siblings and Experienced loneliness and striving for meaning.

Summary: Parents' experiences of having children in need of palliative care include experiences that affect much more than the sick child, where the parental role means difficulties in providing enough both emotionally and in everyday life. Nurses have an opportunity to influence the lives of children and their families with their approach. The uneven access to palliative care for children needs to be highlighted in order for more families to have the opportunity for the support that palliative care can entail. The literature review highlights the need to share parents' experiences in order to make life easier for them and their children.
