Syftet med studien har varit att beskriva och analysera våldsutsatta kvinnors erfarenheter av våld mot husdjur som en form av våld i nära relationer (VINR) för att få en fördjupad förståelse för hur dessa erfarenheter påverkat dem. Studien är kvalitativ och har genomförts i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer med åtta kvinnor. Genom tematisk analys av intervjuerna framkom fyra huvudteman och ett antal underteman. Huvudtemana var Djurets betydelse och väsen, Motstånd, Våldets natur och I våldets spår. Dessa huvudteman analyserades sedan gentemot Johnsons våldstypologi med betoningpå intim terrorism. Resultaten visar hur kvinnor som utsätts för den typ av våld som Johnson betecknar som intim terrorism ofta skapar mycket starka band med sina djur, att djuren är en av få förtroendefulla relationer kvinnan tillåts ha och att djuret ofta uppfattas som en familjemedlem, en partner eller ett barn av den våldsutsatta. Intim terrorism kännetecknas av en mycket hög grad av makt och kontrollutövande i form av olika tekniker som illustreras i makt och kontrollhjulet. Studiens resultat visar tydligt på hur djuret blir en aktiv del i dessa taktiker och därmed blir ett verktyg för våldsutövaren gentemot den våldsutsatta. Kunskapen om den här våldsformen är begränsad särskilt ur ett svenskt och/eller nordiskt perspektiv. Merparten av de studier som gjorts är från Nordamerika, England, Canada och Australien.

The aim of this study was to describe and analyse experiences of pet abuse as a form of intimate partner violence in order to get a deeper understanding of the impact of these experiences and how it has affected these women. The study was conducted through semi structured interviews with eight women. The interviews was analysed throgh thematic analyse and four main themes and a numbeer of sub themes emerged. The main themes were: The meaning and nature of the animal, Resistance, The nature of violence and In the In the aftermath of violence. These themes were analysed according to Johnsons typology of domestic violence especially intimate terrorism. The results show how women who are exposed to the type of violence that Johnson refers to as intimate terrorism often form very strong bonds with their pets, with the pets being one of the few trusted relationships the woman is allowed to have, and the pet is often perceived as a family member, a partner, or a child by the abused woman. Intimate terrorism is characterized by a very high degree of power and control, which is illustrated in the power and control wheel. The study's results clearly show how the pet becomes an active part of these tactics and thus becomes a tool for the perpetrator against the abused. The knowledge about this form of violence is limited, particularly from a Swedish and/or Nordic perspective. The majority of the studies conducted are from North America, England, Canada, and Australia.
