Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is an integrated literature review aimed at exploring the current research on why women are drawn to gang criminality and the positions they hold within the hierarchical structures of criminal gangs. The study also seeks to define the roles and identities these women have and to explore the stigmatization they experience within the gang environment. A total of 25 articles were selected for analysis after a systematic review of available literature. These articles were examined using thematic analysis and theoretical concepts such as power, role, identity, stigma, and hierarchy.

The results show a combination of several risk factors that together contribute to individuals becoming involved in gang criminality. It also becomes clear that there is a distinct hierarchical structure within the gangs that mirrors the patriarchal setup of society. The study further highlights that women within these gang environments often experience stigmatization, a result of the prevailing patriarchal structure, and that their roles and identities are shaped by masculine norms. Additionally, it is noted that there is a lack of Swedish research specifically targeting young women in gang criminality.

Ultimately, further research is suggested to deepen the understanding of these issues and to address the knowledge gaps identified in this overview.
