The experience of living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : A litterature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious condition that affects many people and is characterized by airway obstruction, primarily resulting from tobacco smoking. Common symptoms include increased mucus production, coughing, breathing difficulties, fatigue, weight loss, and dyspnea. Ensuring dignified and effective care requires greater knowledge of the disease and its impact on patients' daily lives.

Aim: The aim was to explore patients' experiences of living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Method:  Literature review based on ten qualitative scientific original articles, retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed.

Results: The results identified four main themes: physical burdens, psychological challenges and strains, social support, and the role of healthcare in providing support and care. Patients experienced significant physical and psychological burdens, such as breathlessness, fatigue, anxiety, and loneliness, which impacted their daily lives and independence. Social support from family members was considered important but could also create challenges and feelings of dependency. A lack of empathy and knowledge among healthcare professionals led to frustration and a sense of inadequate support.

Conclusion: Patients with COPD face physical, psychological, and social challenges, along with reduced support from the healthcare system. Feelings of guilt and shame, caused by being judged for their smoking habits, can lead patients to avoid seeking care. To ensure dignified care and reduce suffering, it is important to increase knowledge about the disease and work with empathy and respect. A person-centered approach can strengthen healthcare relationships, promote involvement, and support self-care.
