Family members' experiences of palliative care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative healthcare refers to the care provided when a disease can no longer be slowed down, and the focus shifts to alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. Family members play an important and active role in the care of their loved ones. The nurse has a responsibility to offer person-centered and equitable healthcare to patients, as well as a respectful and attentive approach to family members.

Aim: The aim was to describe how family members experience palliative care of a relative.

Method: A literature review based on ten qualitative original articles from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed, published between 2014 and 2024. The data analysis was conducted according to Friberg's analysis model.

Results: The results showed that family members' experiences of palliative care were marked by feelings of loneliness, lack of support, and inadequate communication from healthcare staff, which created frustration and worry. Family members felt a sense of exclusion from the care process and expressed a need for greater involvement and support to handle the emotional and practical burden. Physical and sensory aspects of the care environment, such as access to private spaces and an aesthetically pleasing environment, were significant for the families’ ability to feel secure and present at the end of life.

Conclusion: Family members experience significant shortcomings in healthcare, particularly in areas concerning communication, participation, care environment, as well as emotional and spiritual support. These issues are often linked to staff and resource shortages, which result in less person-centered and equitable healthcare.
