Nurse´s experiences of caring for individuals with obesity : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Obesity is one of the public health conditions that continues to rise worldwide as countries' GDP increases. The condition is caused by a complex interaction of risk factors and is linked to several noncommunicable diseases, such as diabetes and stroke. In addition, it can lead to unnecessary suffering for the affected individuals, and it also imposes significant societal and healthcare costs as a consequence. Therefore, nurses have an important role in providing good care and support to this patient group.

The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with obesity.

A literature review was conducted in which 10 scientific articles from the databases PubMed and Cinahl Complete were included in the result. Six of the articles were qualitative, and four were quantitative.

Three main themes were identified in the result, two of which included subthemes. The nurse risks contributing to stigma around obesity. The nurse’s perceived challenges in care encounters with people who have obesity, with three sub-themes: Uncertainty and discomfort, Fear of damaging the care relationship, Cultural aspects. Shortcomings in the care environment and the nurse’s challenges with obesity, with two sub-themes: Time and lack of resources, Lack of competence.

The care of individuals with obesity is complex. High demands are placed on nurses' competence and personal qualities. When there is insufficient education, as well as a lack of resources and support, nurses find caring for individuals with obesity challenging, which can limit their ability to provide person-centered care. However, when nurses are aware of their own biases, possess knowledge of cultural aspects, and have access to resources that support person-centered care, the challenges in care encounters are eased.
