A study on Sami women subjected to violence : "One is broken and believes that one can return to what once was a place of safety, but that place no longer exists." (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to enhance the knowledge about the situation of Sami women who are victims of violence. Through interviews with staff from women's shelters and Sami women who have experienced violence, we have examined the support offered to these women and how they perceive the existing support. We have also explored the impact that the informants feel the Sami community has, as well as the effects of working and living in a rural context for women´s shelters and the Sami women affected by violence.

The results indicate that Sami women who are victims of violence do not receive specific support. Although some shelters have written materials in Sami languages, the initial meeting with the affected women is neutral. The support provided by the shelters is tailored to the individual, but the staff of the shelters request more expertise regarding the situation of Sami women to better support them.

The conclusions from the study show that there is a significant need for increased cultural competence within support functions to ensure that Sami women receive adequate support. The study emphasizes that the unique social and cultural context of Sami women, including the strong Sami community and geographical isolation, often exacerbates their vulnerability. Therefore, it is recommended that future support efforts be developed with a clearer focus on these specific needs.
