Bakgrund: Bröstcancer är en diagnos som kan vara långvarig och livshotande med flera somatiska och psykiska symptom som korrelerar till varandra. Psykisk hälsa är en viktig komponent av helhetshälsan, och behovet av psykosocialt stöd finns i alla faser av sjukdomen. Sjuksköterskor har en viktig roll i att identifiera omvårdnadsbehov och främja psykisk hälsa hos patientgruppen. 

Syfte: Att beskriva hur patienter har upplevt sin psykiska hälsa under tiden med bröstcancer. 

Metod: Litteraturöversikt med 12 kvalitativa artiklar i resultatet från de tre databaserna Cinahl Complete, PubMed och PsychInfo. 

Resultat: Resultatet presenterades i tre huvudteman och sju underteman:

• Meningsskapande av diagnosen; meningsskapande och reaktioner vid diagnostisering; meningsskapande av den nya framtidens innebörd.
• Isolering och utanförskap;utanförskap och stigmatisering i samhället; utanförskap i nära relationer; isolering i sig själv.
• Upplevelser av att hantera livet med bröstcancer; sorg och förlust; acceptans och tacksamhet. 

Slutsats: Patienter med bröstcancer upplever att deras psykiska hälsa påverkas av rädsla för framtiden och skuldbeläggning på sig själv, samt känslor av utanförskap på olika nivåer genom fördomar och diskriminering. Den psykiska hälsan påverkas genom en ny tacksamhet för livet och acceptans, såväl som förlust och sorg. Medvetenhet om den sociala miljön och öppenhet för känslouttryck och spirituella dimensioner kan öka förståelsen för patienternas psykiska hälsa. 

Background: Breast cancer is a diagnosis that can have a long duration and be life threatening with several somatic and psychological symptoms which correlate with each other. Mental health is an important component of overall health, and the need for psychosocial support is present in all phases of the illness. Nurses have an important role in identifying nursing care needs and promoting mental health for the patient group. 

Aim: To describe how patients have experienced their mental health during breast cancer. 

Method: A literature review with 12 qualitative articles in the result from the three databases Cinahl Complete, PubMed and PsychInfo. 

Results: The result was presented into three main themes and seven sub themes: 

• Meaning making of the diagnosis; meaning making and reactions during diagnosis; meaning making of the new future. 
•  Isolation and exclusion; exclusion and stigmatization in society; exclusion in close relationships; isolation within oneself.
• Experiences of coping with life during breast cancer;grief and loss; acceptance and gratitude. 

Summary: Patients with breast cancer experience that their mental health is affected by fears for the future and self blame, as well as feelings of exclusion on different levels through prejudice and discrimination. Their mental health is influenced by a new gratitude for life and acceptance, as well as loss and grief. Awareness of the social environment and openness for emotional expressions and spiritual dimensions can lead to an understanding of the patients’ mental health.
