"I am not crying because I am here. I am crying because I have no friends" : A qualitative study on experiences of loneliness among the elderly. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In Sweden, more than 2.6 million people are over the age of 60, according to Statistiska centralbyrån (SCB, 2022), and loneliness among the elderly is an issue that has attracted attention even at the government level. In 2023, the government allocated 50 million SEK to combat involuntary loneliness among the elderly, which aligns with the UN's Agenda 2030, aiming to promote health and well-being for all ages.

Research shows that loneliness and social isolation among the elderly have serious consequences for their health. My study on loneliness among the elderly aims to explore how older adults experience loneliness, how they cope with it, and what support is available to them. Through interviews with seven elderly individuals aged 65 through 91, residing in care homes and ordinary housing, the study highlights the daily lives and social networks of the elderly. The interviews focus on the participants' experiences and perceptions of social relationships, how they manage physical and mental changes, and the coping strategies they use against feelings of loneliness.

The study's results show that many elderly individuals find joy in small everyday pleasures such as family visits, sports, and reading. Despite their social networks shrinking over time, family and friends remain a central part of their lives. It also becomes apparent that, for some elderly individuals, loneliness starts to emerge primarily after retirement and following the loss of loved ones, but also following a decline in physical health. However, many of the elderly in the study use various strategies, such as social activities or technological tools, to manage the loneliness that can arise.

The analysis of the study reveals that many elderly people experience significant limitations in their daily lives due to deteriorating physical health. It also shows that physical health is highly valued by the elderly as a means to participate in social activities and community life. Physical limitations have been shown to lead to withdrawal and isolation for some elderly individuals. According to Life Course Theory, discussed in the theoretical chapter, past life experiences may be a factor influencing how the elderly perceive their changing life conditions. The study also highlights the theory of "biographical pain," which describes the feelings of sorrow and regret regarding past life events that cannot be corrected, a pain that, according to Malcolm Johnson (2013), cannot be described as either physical or psychological.
