Syftet med studien var att undersöka socialarbetares erfarenheter av möten med personer som utsatt äldre för våld, med fokus på normer och attityder. Vår intention var att utforska professionellas erfarenheter av bemötande till våldsutövare och belysa att våld i nära relation inte försvinner utan snarare förändras i takt med åldrandet.

Vår övergripande forskningsfråga var: hur jobbar socialtjänsten med personer som har utsatt äldre för våld? Genom kvalitativa intervjuer med socialarbetare från äldreomsorgen och relationsvåldsteam har ett antal frågeställningar besvarats. De har bland annat handlat om socialarbetares erfarenheter, upplevelser och tankar kring våld mot äldre. Intervjuerna har sedan analyserats utifrån tidigare forskning och teorin symbolisk interaktionism.

Resultat visar socialarbetarnas utmaningar kring att identifiera det subtila våldet och att hanterakomplexa familjerelationer. Vidare uppleverar socialarbetarna frustration kopplat till självbestämmande och handlingsutrymme i bemötandet gällande våld mot äldre. Resultat visar vidare på att kontakten mellan våldsutövare och socialarbetare kan variera. Det handlar om kontextuella förutsättningar och vem som är våldsutövare. Socialarbetare från äldreomsorgen träffar oftast våldsutövare och våldsutsatt tillsammans, medan socialarbetare från relationsvåldsteam träffar våldsutövare och våldsutsatt för sig. Socialarbetarna beskriver vikten av samverkan och erfarenhetsutbyte mellan enheter och professioner. De utmaningar som studien visar rör demenssjukdomar, normaliseringsprocess och olika definitioner kring våld. Vidare framkom det att våld mot äldre kan uppstå i samband med demenssjukdomar, antingen av den som insjuknat eller av den friska partnern. Socialarbetarna beskrev att vuxna barn med psykisk ohälsa kan innebära en ökad risk för våldsutsatthet hos äldre. Resultatet visar att detta komplexa område riskerar att falla mellan stolarna, då socialarbetarna uttrycker att det inte finns adekvata insatser. Utifrån det visar studien att det förekommer en viss åldersdiskriminering och att våld mot äldre är en bortglömd målgrupp.

The purpose of this study was to examine social workers' experiences of interactions with individuals who have subjected the elderly to violence, focusing on norms and attitudes. Our intention was to explore professionals' experiences of interacting with perpetrators of violence and to highlight that violence in close relationships does not disappear but rather changes with aging. Our overarching research question was: how does social services work with individuals who have subjected the elderly to violence? Through qualitative interviews with social workers from elder care services and domestic violence teams, several questions have been answered. These questions pertained to social workers' experiences, perceptions, and thoughts on violence against the elderly. The interviews were then analyzed using previous research and the theory of symbolic interactionism.

The results show that social workers' experiences of addressing violence against the elderly involve frustration related to autonomy and room for action. Furthermore, social workers experience challenges in identifying subtle violence and managing complex family relationships.

The results also indicate that the interaction between perpetrators and social workers can vary. This depends on contextual conditions and who the perpetrator is. Social workers from elder care services often meet the perpetrator and the victim together, while social workers from domestic violence teams meet the perpetrator and the victim separately. The social workers emphasize the importance of collaboration and the exchange of experiences between units and professions.The challenges highlighted in the study involve dementia, the normalization process, and differing views on what constitutes violence. Additionally, it was found that violence against the elderly canoccur in connection with dementia, either by the person who has fallen ill or by the healthy partner. The social workers described that adult children with mental health issues can pose an increased risk of violence against the elderly. The results indicate that this complex area risks falling between the cracks, as social workers express that there are no adequate interventions. Based on this, the study shows that there is some agediscrimination and that violence against the elderly is a neglected issue.
