Patients’ experiences of self-care after stroke : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Annually, a large number of people are affected by strokes, which can entail significant changes in everyday life. Self-care is a crucial aspect of caring for stroke patients. Self-care is a crucial aspect of stroke patient care. To avoid complications and unnecessary health issues for the patient, it is important that the nurse possess the right knowledge and competence to teach and provide support in the patient’s self-care.

Aim The aim was to illuminate patients’ experiences of self-care after suffering a stroke.

Method The method used is a literature review. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The results are based on the analysis of eight qualitative scientific articles.

Results The analysis resulted in three main themes: Personal responsibility for self-care, Perceived challenges, and Strategies for self-care. The results demonstrate patients' experiences of the difficulties they face, as well as strategies and resources that have promoted a favorable environment with room for recovery through the realization of selfcare.

Conclusion The results highlighted that factors such as person-centered care, taking personal responsibility, finding effective strategies, education and information, and the importance of support and motivation contributed to good self-care in patient. These factors are discussed based on Dorothea Orem’s theory of self-care balance.
