Bakgrund: Multipel skleros (MS) är en inflammatorisk och autoimmun sjukdom som angriper nervsystemet och drabbar vanligen patienter mellan 20 och 45 års ålder. Fatigue kännetecknas av en onormal trötthet som är ett av de vanligaste symptomen som påverkar den drabbades hälsa och livskvalité negativt. Eftersom det är ett osynligt symptom är det viktigt att omvårdnadspersonalen undersöker erfarenheter av fatigue för att få en djupare förståelse kring MS- relaterad trötthet. Sjuksköterskan ansvarar för att hjälpa patienten att vara så autonom som möjligt samt erbjuda dem en anpassad vård och stödja vid hanterandet av trötthetsbesvär. 

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva erfarenheter av fatigue hos patienter med multipel skleros.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt användes och inkluderade totalt tio vetenskapliga artiklar, varav åtta var kvalitativa, en kvantitativ samt en med mixad metod. Databaserna Cinahl Complete och PubMed användes för att söka fram artiklarna som analyserades i fem steg enligt Fribergs metod.

Resultat: Resultatet har sammanfattats i tre huvudteman: Upplevelse av kroppen vid MS-relaterad trötthet, Brist på andras förståelse om trötthet samt Erfarenheter av egenvårdstrategier för fatigue varav sista temat har tre underteman: Yttre miljö, Aktivitet, Sömn.

Sammanfattning: Patienter med MS upplevde att MS-relaterad trötthet påverkade hela kroppen och medförde en del fysiska och psykiska förändringar. Fatigue påverkade patientens förmåga att klara av sin vardag självständigt och delta i det sociala livet. Patienterna kände sig ofta missförstådda av andra eftersom det fortfarande saknas förståelse och kunskap kring fatigue. Upplevelsen av fatigue är individuell och patienterna använde olika hanteringsstrategier. Sjuksköterskans kunskap om fatigue behöver ökas för att bättre stödja patienten vid hantering av trötthetsbesvär samt involvera patientens närstående i vårdmöten som kan hjälpa patienten att bli förstådd av sin omgivning.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory and autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system and typically affects patients between the ages of 20 and 45. Fatigue is characterized by abnormal tiredness and is one of the most common symptoms that negatively affects the health and quality of life of those affected. Because it is an invisible symptom, it is important for healthcare professionals to investigate experiences of fatigue in order to gain a deeper understanding of MS-related fatigue. The nurse is responsible for helping the patient be as autonomous as possible and offering them tailored care and support in managing fatigue.

Aim: The purpose was to describe experience of fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Method: A literature review was used, which included a total of ten scientific articles, eight of which were qualitative, one quantitative and one mixed method. The databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed were used to search for the articles, which were analyzed in five steps according to Friberg’s method.

Results: The results were summarized into three main themes: Experience of the body during MS-related fatigue, Lack of understanding about fatigue from others, and Experiences of self-care strategies for fatigue, the latter of which has three sub-themes: External environment, Activity, Sleep. 

Summary: Patients with MS experienced that MS-related fatigue affected the whole body and caused some physical and psychological changes. Fatigue affected the patient’s ability to manage their daily life independently and participate in social life. Patients often felt misunderstood by others due to a lack of understanding and knowledge about fatigue. The experience of fatigue is individual, and patients used different coping strategies. The nurse’s knowledge of fatigue needs to be increased to better support the patient in managing fatigue, as well as involve the patient’s loved ones in care meetings to help the patient be understood by their environment.
