Nurses' experiences of caring for patients with substance addiction : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The prevalence of substance abuse in the form of drugs and alcohol has increased in the society and more people with substance abuse are seeking healthcare.  Patients with substance abuse feel stigmatized in contact with the care and therefore it is important that the nurse treats these patients well and gives them dignified, person-centred healthcare.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of meeting patients with substance addiction.

Method: A literature review was used as method. The article search was implemented in the databases PubMed and Cinahl Complete. The articles have been analyzed based on Friberg's four steps.

Results: Four themes were identified in the results: Lack of knowledge, fear and uncertainty, lack of resources and time, trust and mistrust. The result showed that nurses had lack of knowledge and that many experienced fear and uncertainty in meeting the patients. The nurses also experienced a lack of resources and that they did not trust the patients because the patients were threatening and unpredictable.

Summary: Nurses find it challenging to work with patients who have a substance addiction as they lack the right resources, training and knowledge. These factors led to distancing between the patients and the nurses. However, the nurses wanted to provide dignified care to the patients and had the motivation to learn more about patients with substance abuse.
