Purpose of review: The purpose of this short literature review is to present the state of art in One Health ethics, a new field working with ethics in One Health approaches. These approaches have focused on promoting health for humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems mainly in a scientific way. Ethics has often been left out. The goal is to summarize the main findings of the limited ethics discussion in the field and propose the future way forward for the field.

Recent findings: There have been several calls for ethics, and the main discussion has mainly focused on (1) the ethical imperative in One Health, (2) the ethical value of ecosystems, (3) normative aspects of health, (4) core ethical concepts, and (5) ethical decision models.

Summary: For the next decade this field needs to be fully developed and included as a core science within the One Health approaches. To be able to solve the complex problems these approaches are facing, such as the triple crisis (climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss), more scholars need to work with One Health ethics, which still is a rather underdeveloped field of ethics. Three future trends for the field of One Health ethics were proposed; 1) to find ethical decision models, 2) to bridge the gap between anthropocentrism, zoocentrism, biocentrism, and ecocentrism, and 3) how to balance valuation between different species, organisms or levels, or ethics and economy.

Hälsa är ett av samtidens viktigaste begrepp. Men vad är hälsa? Den här boken förklarar några av de vanligaste sätten att definiera hälsa som används inom hälso- och sjukvården i vid mening. Den ger teorierna som kan förklara varför målen för hälsa kan se olika ut beroende på vilken grundsyn man har på hälsa.

Boken ger i flera kapitel en bra översikt och fördjupning till skilda vetenskapliga teorier om hälsa som välbefinnande, balans, biologisk normalitet eller förmåga. Därför lämpar den sig väl för grundutbildning. Med sina fördjupningsrutor och övningsexempel är boken också användbar på avancerad och doktorandnivå som en introduktion till djupare studier. Att definiera hälsa vänder sig till alla studenter inom hälso- och sjukvårdens utbildningar, men kan också användas i de utbildningar som ges inom hälso- och sjukvården för djur då bokens slutkapitel analyserar hur hälsa kan användas för djur och ekosystem.

This chapter analyzes theoretical conceptions of health and disease for plants and animals. Compared to human health, the discussion of these concepts is sparse, although animal health has received more treatment than plant health. The concept of disease seems to be taken for granted, and few attempts have been made to make a classification of specific types of diseases. The main emphasis in this chapter will be on the contemporary debate on health definitions in these fields. Although the theoretical discussion on these issues has so far been limited, a categorization of different kinds of health definitions has been presented for animals and plants. The four health categories are health as balance, as biological function, as well-being, and as ability. Similarities and differences between health concepts for humans, animals, and plants are also discussed to see whether there is a possibility to have a universal definition for plants, animals, and humans. This will have implications for One Health approaches.

This book discusses how bioethics can be advanced and expanded. It explores the possibility to find an approach to bioethics that covers all One Health approaches, i.e. One Health, EcoHealth, Planetary Health or One Welfare, each with their holistic and diverse perspectives. Although some attempts exist to find such an ethics of One Health, this is still very much novel ground. From an analysis of the nature of scientific aims and goals of One Health approaches, this book describes and expands on the variety of ethical issues that emerge in this context. Analyzing previous attempts to establish an ethics of One Health, this book shows that the complexity is greater than what is sometimes suggested. Some issues might be solved using a more traditional perspective on bioethics but other issues need a new take on bioethics. This book analyses what is needed for a pluralistic ethics that covers different species – humans, animals, plants – as well as different levels – individual, population, ecosystem. It discusses whether it is possible to find a bridge between versions of anthropocentric, zoocentric, biocentric and ecocentric ethics. Also, due to the trans- and interdisciplinary nature of One Health approaches, it discusses how this ethical framework will relate to different value and ethical systems around the globe. As a result, this book is a roadmap for future discussions and research in this emerging field, proposing an ethical framework for One Health approaches.

This paper will explore two strands of Vilhjálmur Árnason’s extensive body of work: his analysis of dialogue ethics within medical ethics and his analysis of ethics in the Icelandic sagas. The central thesis is that combining these two strands, bioethics and literary analysis, can provide valuable insights to further the discussion of ethics among citizens in multicultural communities.

Vilhjálmur’s1 analysis of the Icelandic sagas shows that the sagas have a specific value foundation, specific virtues as well as narrative in how to present the ethical aspects. In the field of bioethics, he has developed the study of dialogue ethics in several aspects, such as between patient and professional, in interdisciplinary research, and in public deliberation. By integrating insights from historic literary studies with contemporary bioethical research we gain an interesting platform for a discussion on Western assumptions of what constitutes a good dialogue. One of the core aspects in dialogue ethics is how to develop the procedure for a fair, open-minded, and oppression-free discussion in ethical issues. Vilhjálmur’s contributions are summarized here, but could they also be extended beyond the Icelandic and Western horizon?

I will compare his ethical framework to a recent parallel discussion on the claims of indigenous peoples for a fair dialogue. That is, a dialogue that must be inclusive with a carefulness about deciding the foundation of inherent values and the procedure of how to perform the dialogue. Finally, I draw conclusions on what dialogue ethics will gain from this explorative work.

One Health ethics is an emerging field that has gained traction since its origin in approximately 2015. This article builds upon the insights shared during a panel discussion on One Health, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ethical conflicts at the 28th Annual International Sustainable Development Research Society Conference. The conference, themed Sustainable Development and Courage: Culture, Art, and Human Rights, aimed to advance and expand recent knowledge in the field. Key themes discussed during the conference panel included interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinary, risk, resilience, wicked problems with no readily available solutions, and praxis. A conclusion is that ethics should become more prominent within One Health discussions. Four aspects emerged from this discussion: (1) Ethics is needed to solve wicked problems within One Health approaches. (2) Aspects of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinarity need to be considered together with their implications for ethics. (3) Two crucial concepts, risk and resilience, need to be addressed. (4) Ethical decision models are called for and need to be developed.

Texterna i denna arbetsrapport bygger på presentationer vid Det Fjärde Nordiska Forskningsseminariet om Hästunderstödda Insatser som ägde rum den 16–17 september 2022 på Stall Kungsgården, Drottningholm, Stockholm. Seminariet organiserades i ett samarbete mellan Stiftelsen Hippocampus (Stall Kungsgården), Marie Cederschiöld högskola och Organisationen för hästunderstödda insatser. Seminariets titel Häst och lärande – ett område under utveckling var temat för seminariet som samlade cirka 70 nordiska deltagare. I den här rapporten presenteras 9 av de 13 bidragen i reviderad form.

Den här presentationen syftar till att utvärdera hur en kursdesign på högre utbildning bidrar till att stärka studenternas lärande inom problembaserat lärande, centrala begrepp inom hälso- och sjukvården samt kunskaper om människa-hästrelationen. Kursen heter Djur i vården och ges som en valbar kurs på termin 4 på sjuksköterskeprogrammet, Marie Cederschiöld högskola (före detta Ersta Sköndal Bräcke högskola), sedan vårterminen 2018. Hela sjuksköterskeutbildningen utgår från problembaserat lärande (PBL). Under de nio gånger som kursen getts så har teori om hästunderstödda insatser varit en del av kursens innehåll så väl som kursens examination. Det som delvis är unikt med kursen är att studenterna inte bara skall lösa ett problem som i många andra kurser utan också komma på själva problemet. Genom att följa en strukturerad metod för problemlösning skall de sedan i grupp teoretiskt arbeta fram ett förslag på insats som kan göras. De skall som en del av examinationen presentera sin hästunderstödda insats som de skulle gjort för sin egen verksamhet för att introducera insatsen och samtidigt visa på att den bygger på vetenskap och beprövad erfarenhet.

Sambandet mellan människors, djurs och ekosystems hälsa är viktigt för att målet "En gemensam hälsa" skall uppnås. I detta kapitel förklarar vi vad One Health är, vilka teorier som ligger bakom One Health, vilka centrala begrepp och perspektiv som är viktiga för området och forskning om kopplingen mellan människors och djurs hälsa, människors och miljöns hälsa, samt djurens och miljöns hälsa. Vi tar upp olika aspekter rörande lantbruksdjur, sällskapsdjur och vilda djur och hur det sätt vi föder upp och sköter dem på påverkar miljön, och i det långa loppet även människor. Vi beskriver hur djurs sjukdomar kan påverka människors hälsa och omvänt, samt One Health-perspektivets koppling till vård, omsorg och rehabilitering utomhus.
